SPACE 1889: Martian Knights

This is a unit of ex-Grenadier Elven Knights from Forlorn Hope Games mounted on RAFM gashants. They look like an ideal match, but there was some work involved.

The Knights were intended for horses, far less bulky than the gashants. To get them to fit, I took my Dremel and ground out inside the rider’s legs, and carved the saddle from the gashant, and I even had to trim away the surcoat to clear the gashant’s knees. Thankfully they don’t need a perfect fit under their robes.

The lances are made from floral wire, and the standard was printed on my computer, using a clip art design. Their weapon arms are separate, so they could have been couched, but I just prefer upright spears.

There are several different Elven Knights, but I specified this product code, as the upswept shield resembles one of the RAFM shields.

If I had more talent and imagination, I would have painted unit colours and designs on the mount’s beak and flanks – They cry out for decoration. Lance pennants would also spruce ’em up a bit.

I have several other units based on the High Elves, and they look good  together. They can easily be used as a separate force, or can just give variety to my forces.

  1. I think you do yourself a disservice Tim, I think they look stunning, and the work you have put into getting the figures to fit the mounts, looks well worth the effort, I realise that it’s not your style but I cant help feeling that these would benefit greatly from a coat of “quickshade”, as it would really make the creases and recesses on the Gashants hides stand out.

    Cheers Roger.

  2. Roger, thanks for the kind words.

Look at their heads and the folds of the surcoats: They HAVE had a coat of quickshade. And it did do wonders for the Gashants…. just apparently not the photos.

    • Oops sorry Tim I hope I haven’t offended you, I thought the shading on the heads of the Gashants was highlights you’d painted on, I have to say in my defence that the photo’s don’t really do the shading justice, but after having a closer look you can see it in the neck creases of the mounts.

Cheers Roger (the blind old git!).

  3. No offense here! You just told me that my painting style is subtle. At least that’s what I HEARD.
